Cardiovascular Health

Although a traditional Eskimo diet contains much more fat than commonly recommended, Eskimo populations seem to be immune to heart disease. It is now recognized that this is thanks to the intake of large amounts of fish and marine mammals, which are rich in omega-3 PUFAs.
Various scientific studies clearly demonstrate that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, correlates with heart health.
A joint WHO/FAO expert consultation concluded that the associations for maintenance of heart health and the consumption of fish and omega-3 oils (EPA and DHA) are convincing. They stated that "regular fish consumption (1-2 servings per week) can be protective against CHD and ischaemic stroke. The serving should provide an equivalent of 200 - 500 mg of EPA and DHA.” (Joint WHO/FAO expert consultation on diet, nutrition and the prevention of chronic diseases.
